One of the most exciting updates in iPadOS 15 for Apple Reminders is the ability to tag your to-dos. Tags provide an additional layer of organization, making it easier to manage your tasks. The app now features a section on the sidebar dedicated to these tags, allowing you to filter and view tasks based on single or combined tags—a very convenient way to keep things organized.
Another new feature is the ability to create custom smart lists using filters. When setting up a new list, you can select “Make into Smart List,” which lets you define filters based on Tags, Date, Time, Location, Flag, and Priority.
For date filters, you can choose between a Specified Range (specific dates) or a Relative Range (future or past periods). Time filters include options like Hours, Days, Weeks, Months, or Years, either in the future or past. You can also filter by different times of the day: Morning, Afternoon, Evening, or Night. Location filters work the same as they do for individual tasks, allowing you to select specific places or when you’re entering or exiting a car. Additionally, you can filter by flagged tasks and set priorities for your custom smart list.
These smart lists appear alongside your regular lists on the sidebar. The only distinguishing feature is a settings icon on their thumbnails. However, they function just like any other list, and you can even add them to groups. While this integration is seamless, it would be more functional if smart lists had a dedicated section at the top of the sidebar for easy access.
When you add a new reminder to a smart list, the filters and settings you’ve chosen will automatically apply, making it efficient to create tasks with similar characteristics. This automation can save you a lot of time.
Although we don’t recommend printing unless absolutely necessary, the print option can be a clever way to export information from apps that lack an export feature. In iPadOS 15, you can now choose the paper size and orientation for your ‘printouts.’ To export a PDF, simply zoom in on the preview and then export it.
The update also introduces new Share Options, allowing you to control who can add people to your shared lists. You can choose between “Anyone can add people” or “Only you can add people.” Additionally, you can allow certain people to invite others while restricting this for others. These improvements are great for enhancing collaboration, and we look forward to even more collaborative features in the future.
You can now permanently delete completed tasks with the new Clear Completed option. This action can also delete tags if all tasks associated with a particular tag are completed. However, it would be useful if Apple added a recycle bin to recover deleted items in case you change your mind.
Apple Reminders is evolving into a more functional and competitive GTD (Getting Things Done) app. With each update, it becomes clearer that, for iPad users, purchasing an additional GTD app might not be necessary.
There are still a few features we’d love to see in Apple Reminders before it can be considered the best GTD app for the iPad.
