**Avowed: First-Person Combat and Multiple Endings**
Avowed, the highly anticipated action-RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, has been delayed and is now scheduled for release on PC and current-gen Xbox consoles on February 18, 2025. The developer recently confirmed that the game will run at 30 frames per second (fps) on both the Xbox Series X and Series S. At the ongoing Gamescom 2024 event, more details were shared, including the fact that the game will feature multiple endings, with options reaching into double digits.
Obsidian discussed the game’s performance on Xbox consoles during an appearance on the Iron Lords Podcast, which was shared on YouTube. Matt Hansen, the art director, explained that the team is aiming for a “baseline of 30fps” on Xbox consoles. According to Hansen, the focus is on maintaining smooth gameplay while balancing the game’s visual quality.
He mentioned that hitting 60fps wasn’t essential for a first-person single-player game like Avowed, and opting for 30fps allowed the team to enhance the game’s graphical details and lighting. “It’s a trade-off we made early on, and we’re really happy with how it’s turned out,” Hansen said. He added that while they’re still fine-tuning performance specs, the game already runs smoothly.
Avowed isn’t the first Xbox exclusive to launch with a 30fps lock. Titles like Bethesda’s Starfield and Arkane Austin’s Redfall also launched with 30fps on the Xbox Series S/X, but both received patches later to support 60fps. Starfield, in particular, recently added 60fps performance for the lower-end Xbox Series S.
In another interview with IGN at Gamescom, Carrie Patel, Avowed’s game director, confirmed that the game will offer a variety of endings. According to her, the number of possible ending combinations is in the double digits, with each outcome depending on the player’s choices throughout the game. Patel emphasized that Avowed, like other Obsidian games, will shape its ending based on decisions made during the entire playthrough.
Originally planned for a late 2024 release, the game’s delay now positions it for a February 18, 2025, launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and Game Pass.
