A few months ago, we unboxed the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, marking our first experience with an Android device on this channel. Now, we’re thrilled to introduce the first E-ink tablets we’ve ever tried! Our entire team was excited to explore these new devices, and even the non-creative members couldn’t wait to join in on the unboxing.
Onyx Boox generously sent us two beautiful E-ink tablets: the Max Lumi 2 and the Note Air 2 Plus. They also included covers for both devices, which we greatly appreciate! While the Samsung tablet got me excited about Samsung Notes, the Max Lumi 2 has sparked a newfound enthusiasm for note-taking in general.
Of the two, the Max Lumi 2 is the larger device, featuring a 13.3″ screen—slightly bigger than the iPad Pro 12.9 inch. We were impressed by the matte black packaging, which looks and feels premium. Inside the box, you’ll find some manuals, a stylus, and a USB-C charging cable. While it doesn’t come with a charging head, those are easy to find and not too expensive. The Max Lumi 2 is priced at $879.99.
The tablet feels great in hand, with a solid build that doesn’t feel cheap at all. Despite its size, it’s surprisingly lightweight. Both the front and back have a matte finish, though the back is more resistant to fingerprints.
When it came to the Note Air 2 Plus, our team initially thought the writing on the tablet was part of the screen cover. After removing the cover, we realized that even when turned off, the device has a screensaver. We’re not sure how that works yet, but we’re eager to find out!
Neither device has a microphone jack, possibly due to their slim design. The Max Lumi 2 comes with a navy blue stylus, while the Note Air 2 Plus includes a black one. These styluses are thicker than the Apple Pencil and S Pen, but they are just as comfortable to use, likely thanks to their corrugated finish.
The stylus tips are tiny and fragile, which explains the use of rubber tips. We’ll be careful not to lose them. What we love most about these styluses is that they don’t require pairing with the devices—you can simply pick one up and start writing. We’d choose these over any other stylus we’ve tried so far!
The electronic paper technology on these devices is truly impressive. For those who have always preferred the feel of paper, these E-ink tablets might be exactly what you need to make the switch to digital. They look and feel like real paper! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these devices if you’re looking for that perfect blend of digital convenience and the tactile satisfaction of writing on paper.
Stay tuned for a more in-depth review of these devices and the E-ink technology they feature. This was just our team’s first impression of the Onyx Boox Max Lumi 2 and Note Air 2 Plus E-ink tablets. Could this be the technology you need to go fully digital?
